Summer Skin Care does not care if you are Black, White, Pink or Green.
When you dream about your skin in summer, you probably envision it bronzed, smooth and glowing.
However, the reality can sometimes be different if precautions are not taken.
Did you know that although warm weather is good for us, it also comes about with so many challenges?
As the weather gets warmer, our skin can feel a tad bit oilier.
That is usually when you find yourself questioning “Do I really have to moisturize even if it’s 100 degrees outside and my face feels oily?”
The fortunate simple truth is YES, YES AND YES, moisturise you must, and most importantly, don’t forget to wear Sun Protection.
Now a little advice for the Motherland!
To our local Malawians, there seems to be this myth that black people don’t wear sun protection.
News flash, ignore it. Black, White, Mixed, Asian, Male or Female, sun protection is very important as part of your skin care routine.
Now, to our female followers, make sure you lighten up on that foundation and find lighter products, so your skin can breathe and flourish.
About Summer Skin Care
This skin care guide is targeted at both genders of our following, but can be adjusted accordingly.
Here are 5 simple steps for Summer skin care!
1. Make small changes
The heat and humidity of summer means you can swap out all your heavier skin care options.
In winter we bring out our boots, pile on our scarfs and coats, and in summer we bring out our lighter clothes.
Apply the same kind of structure to your summer skin care routine.
There’s a method to this madness. Swap heavy oil and cream based cleansers in favor of a gentle, foaming option.
My personal favourite is Tea Tree.
2. Dual Purpose Summer Skin Care
Yes, find yourself a dual-purpose moisturiser. Try switching to a combination moisturiser and sunscreen during the summer.
Preferably try and invest in a lightweight moisturiser with SPF of 30 and above. Kiehl’s do an Ultra Light Daily UV Defense with SPF of 50.
It is a personal favourite because it intensely moisturises the skin and helps provide your skin with effective defenses against environmental aggressors.
These include UVA/UVB rays and skin-damaging pollutants.
Kiehl’s Ultra Light Daily UV Defense is also fast absorbing and leaves skin with an invisible finish, and can be worn by either gender.
3. Yes, do fear Retinol!
If you are in a country that never experiences a proper hot summer, retinoids can be used all year round and have amazing benefits.
However, when you are in a HOT (notice the capital letters) climate, retinoids can make the skin a little more sensitive to sunlight.
If using retinol creams, please proceed with caution.
4. Add an exfoliation skin-care step.
If you barely or maybe do not exfoliate at all, try and maximise the opportunity that the summer weather presents and exfoliating.
Implement exfoliating into your skin-care routine like never before.
If you already exfoliate, try to slowly increase the amount of days you exfoliate per week. Remove that dead skin.
Exfoliation also opens up those blocked pores and removes those acne causing oils. You can try a D.I.Y, honey and oatmeal exfoliate.
After you’ve exfoliated, you may just want to add a dash of Vitamin C to help prevent hyper-pigmentation.
Did you know that Vitamin C, improves the appearance of of your skin by helping with collagen production?
5. Don’t forget to hydrate.
Remember those people whose skin you constantly admire and they swear by water?
Yes, it is true, hydration is always important for our skin at all times, but even more so in the summer time.
But, whilst you stay hydrated, please don’t forget your wide-brim hats, and sunglasses in the sun.
Try not to over-expose your body to direct sunlight. So, enjoy the shade under that Umbrella-ella-eh -eh and your skin should experience some goodness.
