Malawian Influencers – Samson Kambalu

For the next couple of weeks or so, we will be doing a series on some of Malawi’s Best Musicians, Singers, Songwriters, Fashion Designers, Influencers, Socialites, DJ’s, Entrepreneurs, Digital Content Creators and Videographers and the list goes on…. Meet Samson Kambalu

Samson Kambalu is a Malawian born Oxford-based contemporary artist and author. He looks at cinema and the everyday life as animated by the problematic of the gift. Makes art while busy living life like film strips. Among his many accolades, some of you may know him as Joe Godsten, from the epic biopic #Theboywhoharnessedthewind based on the true story of William Kamkwamba.

Samson was born in 1975 in Malawi, studied at the University of Malawi (BA Fine Art and Ethnomusicology, 1995-99); Nottingham Trent University (MA Fine Art, 2002-03) and Chelsea College of Art and Design (PhD, 2011 – 15). He has shown his work around the world, including Dakar Biennale (2014, 2016), Tokyo International Art Festival (2009) and the Liverpool Biennial (2004, 2016). He has won research fellowships with Yale University and  Smithsonian Institution and was included in All the World’s Futures, Venice Biennale 2015, curated by Okwui Enwezor. Kambalu has been appointed associate professor of fine art at Ruskin College and fellow at Magdalen College, Oxford University.
